Day trading indicators

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

Investors are never short of day trading systems, methods, and timing indicators to refer to when exercising day trading. Knowledge on how to use multiple day trading indicators is crucial to enter and exit the market profitably. Below are some day trading indicators and their properties:
Moving Average (MA) Indicators

Made popular by Richard Donchian more than half a century ago, MA is used to determine the time to buy and sell. Essentially, it is ideal to buy when the price is above the MA and sell when closing is below the MA. Because MA is a lagging indicator, it will help investors gain profits after a trend has commence when holding open position. Due to the same reason however, investors following the MA will also tend to exit after the change of a trend, giving up part of their profits in the process. Different sets of MAs can therefore be used as cross references to minimize this problem and to forecast more accurate outcomes.
Moving Average Variations Using the variations of MAs as indicators have shown a more accurate outcome than using simpler MA figures. Examples of MA variations are moving average convergence and divergence (MACD) and moving average compression (MAC) to gauge the momentum of the market. The use of MACD, developed by Gerald Appel is an indicator that shows when a short-term moving average collides with a long-term moving average.

As with any MA based indicators, these lagging indicators also do not present early warning for squaring up, causing reduced profit. It is therefore advisable to use these in conjunction with other non MA based indicators.
Stochastic Indicator (SI) and Relative Strength Index (RSI)

These two oscillator type indicators are similar in the sense that they are used to reflect overbought and oversold scenes, serving as useful timing indicators in forex. What separates them is the fact that SI has two values compared to only one in RSI. Stochastic present readings between 0 percent to 100 percent. Generally, a reversal or correction of trends can be anticipated when the reading goes above 80 percent.

Again, there a downside to these indicators. Although an oversold or overbought condition have been identified, in some instances, the trend can still continue and not necessarily change. To counter this, the use of SI and RSI should be used along with other timing indicators.
Parabolic SAR Indicator

A parabolic indicator is derived from mathematical calculations to come up with a sell number and a buy number that investors can use as sell stops and buy stops. SAR stands for 'stop and reverse' and is very useful in trending markets. Since this method is very objective, it is great as a mechanical system in trading. Because parabolic indicators tend to perform poorly in highly volatile market, using it with other indicators will increase its accuracy.
Directional Movement Indicator (DMI)

DMI, was developed by Welles Wilder and is derived from proven theories to determine market strength. A call of action can be identified with the use of its three component, the +DI value, the -DI value and the Average Directional Movement Index (ADX). When the ADX goes above 20, the trend is generally strong. The higher this reading is, the stronger the trend.
Rate of Change (ROC) Indicator

The ROC is the difference in price now and then. ROC can be calculated for various length of time, the most popular in forex being 12 day and monthly ROC. According to Jake Bernstein in his book, 'The Compleat Guide to Day Trading Stocks', "I believe that both the momentum and ROC have been ignored and underrated as trading indicators and as valid inputs for trading systems. His point is that due to the adaptability of ROC,they can be incorporated into trading system where they serve more than just indicators. The downside? Again, this indicator may lag according to market trend.

For various reasons, there's never one indicator good enough on its own. As John L. Person of 'Candlestick and Pivot Point Trading Triggers' puts it, "...there is no holy grail for any single trading indicator or style."

Indian currency in forex

Saturday, October 16, 2010

The Indian Rupee is the currency of India. The currency is called The Rupee because Rupee translated into English means silver, which is what the coins used to be made of. The Reserve Bank of India is responsible for controlling the distribution of the currency. The most widely used symbol for the rupee is Rs. The ISO 4217 code for the Indian currency is INR and the modern Rupee can be divided into 100 Paise (singular Paisa).

In most parts of India, The Rupee is also known as The Rupee, Roopayi, Rupaye, Rubai or any of the other terms derived from the Sanskrit rupyakam, Raupya meaning silver and rupyakam meaning coin of silver. However in West Bengal, Tripura, Orissa, and Assam, Bengali, Oriya and Assamese languages are spoken. Thus The Rupee is known as a Taka and is written as such on Indian banknotes.

As of 1st June 2000, foreign exchange transactions in India became more progressive in accordance with the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999 (FEMA). Previously, The bank of India was required to give their permission to foreign exchange dealers before they were able to make any transactions. Today, however, permission from the Bank of India is no longer necessary and foreign exchange dealers are able to make transactions freely provided they adhere to present rules.

In the early to mid 20th century, countries of the Persian Gulf and Arabian Peninsula widely used the Indian rupee as a common currency. External use of the rupee lead to gold smuggling which damaged India's foreign reserves significantly. In order to combat this a seperate currency was created. The Gulf rupee was introduced by the Indian government in 1959 as a replacement for the Indian rupee, to be used for circulation exclusively outside the country [1]. At this time, the Indian rupee was being traded to the British pound at a rate of 13 rupees for 1 pound.

Both Kuwait and Bahrain would later replace the Gulf Rupee with their own currencies (the Kuwaiti dinar and the Bahraini dinar) after gaining their independence from Britain in 1961 and 1965, respectively.

On June 6 1966, India devalued the rupee. To avoid having their shared currency be devalued, several states using the Rupee instead chose to adopt their own currencies. The Qatar and Dubai riyal was adopted by Qatar and most of the Trucial States, while the Bahraini dinar was adopted by Abu Dhabi. Oman was alone in continuing to use the Gulf rupee, with the government establishing the currency at its previous trading rate to the Brittish pound. In 1970 The Gulf Rupee was replaced by Oman with its own Rial.

First of all, you have to understand what Forex stands for, that is, foreign exchange. This is also called FX. When you trade in the Forex market, one currency is bought while another currency is simultaneously sold. Sometimes the foreign exchange market is called an over-the-counter market.
When getting into the nitty gritty of the Forex market, we see that currencies often trade in pairs; for example the Euro and the USDollar or EUR/USD or the US Dollar and the Japanese or USD/JPY. With the Forex market there is no centralized exchanged. All transactions happen by way of electronic network or by telephone.
The US dollar could finally break the ice this week. This currency continues to trade on the near critical levels on the Forex market today. The Forex market is still waiting for a directional break. However, commodity dollars such as the Canadian dollar as well as the New Zealand dollar have begun to tumble below key support.
While important rate decisions are to be announced and consumption and employment indicators are to be released, this week may be the one in which we shall see meaningful breakfast.
Two sources are responsible for the daily turnover in the world: foreign trade and speculation for profit. Most of the traders in the Forex market go for the largest, most liquid currency pairs such as the US dollar, Euro, Swiss Franc, Australian Dollar, Japanese Yen, British Pound and the Canadian Dollar.

Russian currency in forex

Monday, October 11, 2010

Russian currency is one profitable currency which has been recommended by innumerable large banks of the world. Russian Rouble, for the past 500 years, has been established as the chief currency of Russian federation. Currently, it is being promoted as one of the most intelligent investments of the season.

Belief of the banks
Most of the banks believe that in the coming future, there would be a dramatic strengthening of the rates of the rouble. The impact of the currency meltdown and the global recession along with the spiraling rates of inflation has been jeopardizing the quotes and exchange rates of different currencies, thereby weakening their establishment in the forex market. so let's take a look on what the situation of Rouble has been undergoing over the past few months.

According to the Bloomberg, it has been opined by the Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch and Co and Deutsche bank that the exchange rate of rouble will undergo an increase to 4 % in the coming year. Thereby, the weakening of the existing inflation would take place as the Central bank of Russia would have to face tremendous pressure, which would later only cause the rouble revaluation. Though, the essential opinions of the western bankers have not been evaluated so far. Alexey Uljukaev, the vice president of the bank of Russia declared that the currency purchase of around 20 billion dollars had been taken into implementation, as one of the pivotal steps to limit the strengthening of the exchange rates of the rouble in the coming future.

Response to Banks recommendations
In return to the recommendations of the largest banks of the world for the purchase of rouble, the Bank of Russia clearly opines that the entire case is purely speculative. The increase in the exchange rate, which has been predicted by the three banks, tends to be one of the major troubles for the Russian economy, as it would increase the rate of inflation, which already has touched 13% in April. At the same time, the rouble strengthening would also have detrimental impact on the exporting of gas and petroleum.

But the Central bank also opined that the large reserves, balance payments and important economic indicators would be enough to prevent the devaluation of rouble, in spite of the global crisis hitting the shores. The Central bank also promises that no kind of volatility would be added in terms of the valuation of the rouble.
Financial position in 2007

Delving into the history, it's revealed that in the year 2007, the bank of Russia had supported the rouble strengthening during the inflation development to 8.5%. But at present, the inflation rate is about to cross 13.3%, which is at least five times more than the cumulative average index. Though, the consumer costs, which are restrained, have still not been affected by the two continuous discount rates issued by the Bank of Russia. Thus, at present, the cost of growth of the rouble continues to be the crucial tool to fight against the inflation, as mentioned by the Central Bank.

Thus, the expectations of the leading banking cooperation have transformed Rouble into one of the most perspective and anticipated currency of the world in forex marketing. Though, the manner in which its demand is growing, it would automatically cause the strengthening of the rouble. Thus, on one hand the pioneer banks of the world proclaim the rouble strengthening which might occur within the coming 6 months, the Central Bank confidently declares that it has means to control the rouble fluctuations, which would definitely play a pivotal role in Forex trading.

Mexican currency in forex

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Earlier, Mexico was one of the viceroyalties of Spain from the year 1535. During this time, the Escudos were the first coins of Mexico and they were minted by the decree in 1535.But later, the silver peso was introduced as the legal tenders in the year 1732. It also developed as one of the major trading currencies. During the 16th to the 19th century, more than 3 billion Mexican pesos were thereby minted.

Once again during the Mexican revolutions, the monetary chaos had occurred in the country, ranging from 1910 to 1917. One of the major reasons which caused the jeopardizing of the economy was the issuance of the order that the country had to pay for the war. Till that time, paper money had entered the market and the respective depreciation of their money has already occurred. Later in the year 1916, Mexico currency retraced to the silver standards. But it was in the year of 1918 when the Mexican Peso was made the official currency of the country.
Mexico Central Bank

After the earnest organizational and budget efforts of the President Plutarco Calles, the operating of Banco de Mexico started from 1st September 1925. One of the main works of the Central Bank of Mexico was to issue currency circulations and implement the regulations in Mexico.

Moreover, the bank also had to face initial hesitations in terms of gaining the trust of the citizens into paper money after the last failure of the paper money and its jeopardized historical significance. Then in 1969, the printing house for currency of the bank started with the respective operations, which played a pivotal role in the restoration process.
New Pesos

In the year 1991, the Monetary System of United Mexican States was implemented. This newly introduced unit was equivalent to 1000 pesos of the earlier trading unit. This newly introduced unit was called as "new pesos". This was done to differentiate them from the earlier pesos.
1994 Currency Crisis

Some time after the President Zedillo took over the office, Mexico unfortunately entered into one of the most jeopardizing currency crises, every faced by the country in the past. Thus, to lessen the impact of the crisis, Zedillo publicly announced that the Bank of Mexico would not try to defend the mushrooming high currency rates. At the same time, he also declared that the Mexican peso would be allowed to float freely against the respective trade values of the US dollars.

This implementation bought a tremendous impact on the forex trade market. The main reason was the ambiguity created in the exchange rates. The dropping of the exchange rates basically meant the falling of 3 pesos to one dollar to suddenly rate of 10 pesos to one dollar.

This crisis had been summoned as the "December mistake" and the main reason behind it was the Zedillo's decision to allow the free floating of the peso with respect to the US dollars.
Global Recession and Mexican pesos

The global recession had a major impact on the currency trading and forex market of Mexico. In this very context, Guillermo Ortiz, the Governor of the Central bank said that the wide gap which is being constructed in between the US and Mexican interest rates would cause inflationary pressure and also add to the jeopardizing of the economy in the longer run. He has also mentioned that if the situation continues, the monetary policy would be adopted by the Central bank.

In a nutshell, the Mexican peso has witnessed several twists and turns, and right now, it continues to be effected by the global recession.

Australian currency in forex

Friday, October 8, 2010

At the time when New Zealand dollar had a similar rate to the Australian dollar in 1980s it was suggested that the Australian currency should be an 'Australis' and it was further defined as an 'ANZAC dollar'. When it was eliminated by the Australian treasurer the Australian dollar was thought to be adopted or the value of the New Zealand dollar attachment to the Australian.
The currency union can establish a fixed currency rate rather than the present situation of rates fluctuation. The sense of this situation is that the currency value gets fixed with respect to some measure instead of the actual currency confirmation like the currencies rates attachment to the price of gold.

The Commonwealth of Australia that includes Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Christmas Island, Norfolk Island, the independent Pacific Island states of Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu has the AUD (Australian dollar) as its official currency, marked with the dollar sign $, since 14 February, 1966. There are a number of abbreviations, such as A$, $A, $AU, AU$, used to differentiate the Australian dollar from other countries operating dollar. "Aussie battler" is its another name. This currency had a different name, the "Pacific Peso" at the short period from 2001 to 2002. One Australian dollar contains 100 cents.
The Australian dollar has the fifth position at the priority of traded currencies in forex. It goes after the U.S. dollar, the euro, the yen, and the Pound sterling. The Australian dollar holds from 4% to 5% of the transactions around the world. The economy stability and the absence of a severe governmental regulation of the AUD makes it appealing for currency traders.

The monetary policy of Australia is established by RBA (The Reserve Bank of Australia). It has three key objectives:
  • the Australian currency stability;
  • full employment support within the country;
  • the wellbeing of the economy and the prosperity of the Australians.
The AUD$ correlates with the prices for gold and commodities by 80%. It happens because Australia has the third place in gold production in the world and its gold export makes up $5 billion annually. This causes the AUD$ dependence on the commodity prices: the Australian dollar rises when they go up and declines when they get lower.
The British-established colonies have widely used lots of currency forms. The Bank of New South Wales has issued first notes in Australia in 1816. The Australian Notes Act (1910) gave birth to the First Australian notes in 1913. The British system of twenty shillings to a pound and twelve pence to a shilling has served an example. The decision of decimal currency adoption was taken in 1963 by the Australian government and the currency named "Dollar" was accepted on February 14, 1966.
Nowadays, the Australian bank notes are made of plastic. Australia was the first country that started using this technology and it is proud of this fact a lot.
There are the 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 dollar notes in Australia. Moreover it also has the coins of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents as well as the ones of one and two dollars.

Japanese currency in forex

Thursday, October 7, 2010

The currency of Japan is the Yen (¥). There are 4 different types of notes and 6 different types of coins in circulation: Notes include 1,000, 2,000, 5,000 and 10,000 Yen notes whereas coins include 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Yen coins. Cash is easily the most common method of transaction in Japan, however credit cards are widely accepted in many places. While travelers' checks (in Yen or US dollars) are generally not easily accepted at small shops and restaurants most banks will easily exchange them. Yen can be changed in many places including international airports, foreign exchange banks, and other authorized money changers. Currency exchange counters are conveniently open during normal business hours at all airports.

In 2006, the Japanese Yen was considered to be one of the currency market's largest disappointments. If one has only been watching the value of USDJPY, which finished the year less than a percent away from where it started trading, the Yen's "disappointment" may have been hard to notice. Rather, the Yen saw most of it value decrease against the Euro and British pound , with the currency lowering 10 percent versus the Euro and 12 percent versus The Pound.

In fact, the devaluation of the Yen - japanese currency - was so drastic that it drove the EUR/JPY to an all-time high and the GBP/JPY to an 8 year high. The massive discrepancy between the Yen's performance against the dollar versus the Yen's performance against all other major currencies develop from the uncertainty that has accompanied the US economy throughout the past year. However when looking at the Yen's performance against the other major currencies, it paints a way more accurate picture about how the market feels about the Yen compared to the U.S Dollar.

After the Bank of Japan made no further changes following their only interest rate hike in July, traders quickly realized that interest rates would continue at their low values throughout the year, making carry trades against the valuable non-US dollar pairs still a solid investment. In the near future, we will start to see the Japanese economy make gains from a weak Yen, which will allow for another rate hike by the Bank of Japan, while simultaneously increasing the risk of carry trade unwinding and reserve diversification.

Following the United States Dollar, the Euro and the Pound Sterling, The Yen is widely used around the world as a reserve currency. The Yen has the ISO 4217 code of JPY and 392 while the Latin symbol for it is ?. Large quantities of yen are often counted in multiples of 10,000 (man, ¥) in the same way that values in the United States are often quoted or rounded off to hundreds or thousands. In 1870 , coins were introduced to the Japanese economy. Silver coins in denominations of 5, 10, 20 50 sen and 1 yen were distributed in addition to gold coins consisting of Yen in the amounts of 2, 5, 10 and 20 yen. In 1871, Gold 1 yen were introduced followed by copper 1 rin, 1 and 2 sen in 1873. The distribution of the Yen banknotes started in 1872, only two short years following the currency's conception. Throughout the Yen's history, denominations have ranged between 10 sen and 10,000 yen.

Before and during World War II, several different authorities such as the Ministry of Finance and the Imperial Japanese National Bank issued banknotes in yen. It is also interesting to note that several countries comprising The Allied forces also issued some Japanese banknotes shortly after the war. Since then however, the Bank of Japan has become the only authority with permission to issue banknotes. Five series of Yen have been issued since World War II. The current series, Series E, contains notes condidting of ¥1000, ¥5000, and ¥10,000 values.

Korean currency in forex

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Currency trading is the most important aspect of forex trading. Just like other currencies, even the Korean currency has its own established niche with respect to currency trading. But unfortunately, the ongoing global recession and the mushrooming liquidity crisis has caused a detrimental impact on the trading of the Korean currency.

Impact of recession on Korean currency

The fallout is taking a very brutal aspect in terms of the Korean currency trading. Some time back, the value of US dollar has been doubling against the respective value of the Won. In the beginning of 1997, the value of USD-KRW was 800 which thereby increased to 1600 by the end of 1997 just like the forex trade; even the stock marketing sector could not be left untouched. This thereby affected the economy of the Korea in a very detrimental manner.

Currently, the value of Won, the Korean currency has suffered a continuous low in the past three months. The slumping suffered against the dollar is the lowest one when compared in the history of past two and a half years. This has tremendously affected the sentiments of the forex traders and the investors.

But at the same time, the president of South Korea, Lee Myung-bak opined that foreign currency crisis could not materialize in Korea in any perspective. Though the conditions are continuously compared to 1997, some of the experts believed that circumstances this time are entirely different from those ten years back.
South Korean banks

In a major development, the South Korean bank is now turning to the Federal Reserve of United States for the need of funding. On the other hand, the Korea Development Bank has confirmed that it would sell around eight hundred and thirty dollars in the form of bonds worth of three months. At the same time, even the Kookmin bank, which is one of the top lenders, confirmed that it would also sell its bonds which are short dated.
Step to purchase domestic bonds

The conditions have presently deteriorated to such extent that the even the bank of Korea has publicly revealed its future step of purchasing the domestic bonds, which are sold by the local banks. This step is taken to expand the liquidity of local currencies. At the same time, the currency liquidity with foreign respective is one of the major problems faced by the Korean currency. At the same time, the increasing value for credit default swap in Korea has been fuelling to the loss.

There is tremendous decrease in the foreign investments in the trading sector thereby also affecting the impact of the currency conversions in the trading.
Instuitional buying

Turning to the instuitional buying, the consumer sentiment index of Korean currency, when calculated in six different categories, has witnessed a thorough fall to 88 in this October.

One of the market analysts from Samsung Securities revealed that after the pension lenders, the institutional buyers are the most important purchasers in the forex trading sector.
Position of Won in international market

In one of the recent quotations, even the national Pension service of Korea has declared that the Won is presently at its bottom most position in the international domain.

The entire down grading of Won has occurred due to the releasing of the 700 billion dollars bailout plan introduced by the U.S dollar at present. As a result, the US dollar is gaining its position in the forex trading and at the same time, many of the Asian countries, just like Korea is facing a tremendous impact.

Thus, it's indeed the necessity of the hour for the Korean economy to buckle up the position and vigorously work to uplift its quote in the currency trading.

European currency in forex

Monday, October 4, 2010

The third stage of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) was launched in 1998 with the establishment of a European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt, Germany which was a headquarters used to manage the introduction of a new single pan-European currency. The name chosen for the basic denomination of this european currency was The Euro.

The introduction of The Euro has surely been one of the major economic highlights of the decade. Having a common currency has contributed heavily to the further economic integration of all participating countries. The European currency has increased market transparency by making prices more easily comparable. Pan-European trade has become more attractive and lucrative as trade and investment is no longer be exposed to exchange-rate risks, and the costs associated with currency conversion have been eliminated. Eleven countries qualified for initial membership of the EMU: Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain, and The Netherlands.

On January 1, 1999, the conversion rate between the currencies of the eleven participating countries and the Euro became fixed permanently and the ECB established a single monetary policy. The Euro, as of this date, in non-cash form, became legal tender in all eleven aforementioned countries meaning that The Euro could be used for checks and credit transfers and other non-cash transactions.

On January 1, 2002, new Euro banknotes and coins were put into circulation. Over a certain period of time, which was determined by each participating country, notes and coins in the national currency were withdrawn from circulation. By July 1, 2002, Euro notes and coins became the only legal tender amongst the participating countries.

The European Commission introduced a new currency symbol to represent the new Euro and registered the currency code EUR with the ISO 4217 (Currency Codes) Maintenance Agency as representing this currency.

The Euro is divided into 100 Cents. In the language of each of the participating countries, "cent" is officially required to be used in legislation in both the singular and in the plural form of the word, despite the fact that in English and French the natural plural cents is recommended and used by the general public. (For more information on language and The Euro, see Linguistic issues concerning The Euro.)

All Euro coins have one side in common showing the denomination or value in addition to having a national side which shows an image chosen by the specific country that issued the coin ; Whereas the monarchies often have a picture of their reigning monarch, other countries may display their national symbols. Despite the differences between countries on one side of the coin, all coins can be used in any of the member states: For example, a Euro coin bearing the image of the Spanish King is legal tender not only in Spain, but also in Austria, Germany or any other member state where The Euro is in use. Currently there are ?2, ?1, 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c coins in circulation, though the latter two are not generally used in either Finland or the Netherlands thought they still retain their legal tender.

For each denomination there are common designs on both sides of the banknotes which are issued in values of : 5?, 10?, 20, ?50, ?100, ?200, ?500. Despite the fact that some of the higher denominations are not distributed in all countries, they are still legal tender.

Costa rica currency in forex

The unit of currency in Costa Rica is called the costa rican colon (CRC), which trades somewhere around 518 to the U.S. Dollar and about 675 to the Euro. A new currency exchange system was introduced on October 16, 2006 which permitted the value of the Colon to float between two bands similar to the system previously employed by Chile. By using this strategy, the Central Bank will be better equipped to tackle inflation and discourage the use of US dollars. Since then, the value of the colon against the U.S dollar has stabilized.
Money can be exchanged in banks in Fortuna, Jaco, or San Jose, or also at your hotel in San Jose. The airport currency exchange booths usually offer poor exchange rates, and street vendors occasionally trade counterfeit bills. Any hotel cashier in San Jose is usually a good option as it offers a safe alternative to street vendors and a better exchange rate than at an airport booth.
For tourists: Money exchange offices known as, "Casas de Cambio," are generally open from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. Banks are open as well from 9am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday. All money exchange offices and banks are closed on Sundays thus money can only be obtained on Sundays via ATMs. Note; Small towns may not have ATMs, so be sure to inquire as to when and where the best place is in order to obtain money.

Chinese currency in forex

Saturday, October 2, 2010

Some form of currency has been used in China dating back to the New Stone Age. The Chinese are also credited with inventing paper money in the 9th century.

The chinese currency used today on the mainland of the People's Republic of China, is Renminbi, (abbreviated RMB) which litterally means "people's currency". The units for Renminbi are known as the Yuan, Jiao, and Fen: 1 Yuan = 10 Jiao = 100 Fen.

Hong Kong, Macao and the Republic of China (Taiwan) have their own monetary policies and currencies that may not be compatible with the Renminbi.

The U.S. Treasury Department's most current assessment of foreign trading partners' exchange rate policies failed to acknowledge that China was manipulating the value of its currency to better its international competitiveness. However, when further investigating the subject, all evidence shows that China has crossed lines that have been established to determine whether a nation has been involved with currency manipulation several times in the past.

This currency manipulation is particularly problematic when considering the enormous size and impressive continual growth of trade imbalances between the United States of America and China. Approximately a quarter of the entire U.S. trade deficit, which has reached a shocking 6% of gross domestic product (GDP) can be attributed to the bilateral deficit with China. It is widely agreed upon by experts that this deficit is unsustainable and that the process of its unwinding could be costly for both the United States and its major trading partners. The adjustment will become continually agaonizing the more this deficit increases. China's currency policy is the primary hurdle to reducing this deficit now rather than later (when the costs will be higher).

As previously noted, China has been in violation of all established currency manipulation standards (September 25, 2006).

China's role in global imbalances is even larger than the previous numbers might suggest. A significant increase in the value of the Chinese currency, the Renminbi, is needed to reduce the imbalances, however China has blocked any significant increase on the value of the Renminbi by heavily intervening in the foreign exchange markets, buying upwards of $15 billion to $20 billion per month for several years to prevent market pressures from increasing its currency's value. China has avoided international sanctions, to this date, by portraying its currency undervaluation as an off-budget export and job subsidy.

In keeping the Renminbi undervalued, China has also managed to deter several other Asian countries, such as Japan and India, from allowing their currencies to rise against the U.S dollar out of fear of losing their competitive position against China. Thus, China's policy on currency has removed practically all of Asia from the international adjustment process. (march 2006)
